Health and Global Policy Institute (HGPI) Senior Manager Mr. Shunichiro Kurita gave a lecture at the Public Lecture of the 11th Forum on Research Ethics, “Research Ethics: Seeing Both the Trees and the Forest — Considering the Future of Dementia Prevention Together with People with Dementia, Their Families, and Citizens,” organized by the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED).

In a lecture titled “The Evolution of Dementia Policy and Discourse Surrounding ‘Dementia Prevention,'” Mr. Kurita provided an overview of the trajectory of Japan’s dementia policy in the context of the current situation, in which the number of people living with dementia, including those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), has surpassed approximately 10 million. He discussed the process leading to the enactment of the Basic Act on Dementia in 2023, with a particular focus on the policy debate surrounding “dementia prevention” that has unfolded since the Framework for Promoting Dementia Measures in 2019 and its outcomes. Furthermore, Mr. Kurita shared his views on how anticipated advances in science and technology may influence policy discourse on dementia going forward.

HGPI will continue to contribute to discussions on health policy, including in the field of dementia, and to present policy options to society through collaboration with diverse stakeholders.
