On July 10, 2025, Dr. Favour Omileke, Program Specialist of Health and Global Policy Institute (HGPI), attended the International Longevity Centre (ILC) Roundtable Discussion and presented her opinion on the subject topic ‘What can England’s upcoming 10-year health plan learn from Japan about responding to an ageing society?’
This roundtable discussion was organized by the ILC UK as a response to the new NHS’s 10-Year “Fit for the Future” Plan (formally known as the NHS Long Term Plan). One of the principal axes of this plan is centered on healthy ageing. Japan is renowned for being the most aged country globally. Therefore, the UK hopes to learn from the Japanese approach to healthy ageing in order to ensure an effective implementation of the NHS Long Term Plan.
During her presentation, Favour compared the Japanese and the UK approaches to healthy ageing and highlighted that both countries are encountering similar challenges regarding healthy ageing. She also suggested potential solutions that may counter the challenges related to healthy ageing in both countries, such as evidence-based, citizen-centered policies that address the needs of the ageing society and a collaborative, multidisciplinary, solution-focused approach to policy formation.
