On December 9, 2024, Planetary Health Project of Health and Global Policy Institute (HGPI) released a policy recommendation titled “Integrating Climate and Health for a Sustainable Society: Incorporating a Planetary Health Perspective into Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).” This proposal aims to reflect health perspectives in the revised NDCs (Nationally Determined Contributions), which the Japanese government is currently reconsidering in light of discussions on the 7th Basic Energy Plan. The government is expected to advance deliberations on concrete reduction targets by the end of 2024, covering commitments for the post-2025 period.
This policy recommendation was highlighted in an article published on December 13, 2024, by Alterna Online, titled “Calls for Ambitious NDCs Emerging from Various Fields, Including Healthcare and Outdoor Activities.”
The article emphasizes the critical importance of the upcoming NDCs, describing them as “among the most important documents to be created by nations this century.” It also notes the ambitious calls from various sectors to ensure alignment with the 1.5°C target.
