Health and Global Policy Institute (HGPI) submitted a written opinion on the “Model Core Curriculum for Nursing Education” draft by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Higher Education Bureau, Medical Education Division. (The call for public comments is now closed.)
In recent decades, countries around the world have become increasingly aware of the importance of introducing curricula that promote a comprehensive understanding of “sustainability” and “planetary health” in the education of healthcare professionals. This includes a reference to the health challenges posed by emerging infectious diseases and weather-related disasters due to global environmental changes such as climate change and a discussion of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
HGPI has released a policy recommendation, “Model Core Curriculum for Nursing Education Looking Towards the Future of Post-SDGs: The Necessity of a Planetary Health Perspective Including Climate Change and Health.” on May 30, 2024. In this public comment, we have made suggestions based mainly on the information referred to in this policy proposal, while also taking into account the results of the “Survey of Japanese Nursing Professionals Regarding Climate Change and Health (Preliminary Version)” released on September 11, 2024.
