About AMR

The usage of antimicrobials causes bacteria or pathogens to change over time and makes antimicrobial pharmaceuticals less effective. This process is called antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

When AMR infections occur and antimicrobials become ineffective, these infections can in the worst cases be fatal. In Japan and overseas, more and more microbes are developing AMR. If the current situation continues unabated, the annual number of deaths due to AMR infections is projected to increase to about 10 million people globally by 2050.

HGPI issued calls for action on this issue and AMR Alliance Japan was established in November 2018 with the goal of driving discussions and promoting policies for AMR with representatives from industry, Government, academia, and civil society. In its role as secretariat of AMR Alliance Japan, HGPI works to formulate policy recommendations and to see those recommendations implemented.
