Ms. Eri Yoshimura, a Senior Manager at Health and Global Policy Institute (HGPI), contributed to the article titled “Necessity of Kidneyl Disease Countermeasures in the Community through the Integration of Industry, Government, Academia and the Patient” in the October 21, 2024 issue of the Jichi Nippo (a Japanese newspaper). Please see the attached file below for the full text of the article. (Japanese only)
As of the end of 2022, there are approximately 350,000 chronic dialysis patients in Japan. Since the average age of induction of dialysis is 71.42 years old and it costs 5-6 million yen per patient, it is an urgent issue for local governments from the viewpoint of medical cost optimization. In order to improve the quality of life of patients and their families, early detection and intervention at the stage of CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease), which is before the introduction of dialysis, is desirable. In addition to policy promotion by both the central government and local governments, industry, government, academia, and the private sector must work together to implement local measures to prevent CKD.
In 2023, through discussions with experts from industry, government, academia, and the private sector, as well as interviews with local governments, HGPI compiled a policy proposal and a collection of good practices for local governments that will be required in the future regarding kidney disease countermeasures. This year, HGPI will continue our activities to promote kidney disease countermeasures.
