The Health Policy Academy (HPA) is a public lecture series for citizens interested in learning about health policy. It is offered by Health and Global Policy Institute (HGPI), a non-profit, independent think tank. Since the first session in 2015, nearly 400 people have attended the HPA. The course has provided content for beginners in health policy through a variety of programs, including lectures by opinion leaders from the public and private sectors, and discussions among students from diverse backgrounds.
In recent years, there have been many textbooks and courses on health policy, and it has become possible to engage in various exchanges of opinion and access content online. On the other hand, health policy is characterized by diverse stakeholder perspectives and consensus building can be challenging. However, the aim of the various systems surrounding healthcare is to support our lives and our health and to enable us to lead a high quality of life. At the Health Policy Academy, in line with HGPI’s mission of “Achieving citizen-centered health policy by bringing stakeholders together as an independent think-tank,” we aim to provide an opportunity for students to go beyond their day-to-day positions and engage with health policy as individuals and consider its future direction.
Building on the curriculum from previous terms, the 14th term will offer an upgraded curriculum that includes perspectives on more diverse healthcare systems. In addition to the theoretical aspects such as ethics, norms, and the use of evidence that form the basis of policy, we will cover content that looks to the future of health policy, as well as advocacy activities to engage seriously with society from the perspective of individual citizens. Through discussions and group work with students from a variety of backgrounds, you will have the opportunity to experience the mindset required for actual policymaking, such as reconciling different perspectives and reaching consensus.
