[Event Report] Symposium for the Establishment of Kanagawa Medical Innovation School -Development of Global Public Health Experts- (February 3, 2017)

“Symposium for the Establishment of Kanagawa Medical Innovation School -Development of Global Public Health Experts-” was convened on February 3, 2017. This symposium provided a platform for multi-stakeholder discussion, with experts from the Kanagawa prefectural government, private and academic sectors in Japan, and around the world, on the concept of Kanagawa Medical Innovation School (MIS) and expected career paths for its prospective graduates.
Welcoming Remarks/Keynote Address
Welcoming remarks were given by Governor Yuji Kuroiwa of Kanagawa Prefecture, explaining the concept of “ME-BYO” (which is the idea that systems should focus on addressing transition phases between health and sickness), Kanagawa Prefecture’s Healthcare New Frontier Policy and MIS vision for human resource development. Professor Kan Hiroshi Suzuki of Public Policy from the University of Tokyo elaborated that MIS will be world’s one of a kind graduate school, different from all the other schools of public health. It will utilize Kanagawa Prefecture’s extended networks, involving research institutes and industry domestically and internationally. Professor Suzuki emphasized that in addition to human resource development, MIS will contribute to policy makings by Kanagawa Prefectural Government as a think tank, and development of community health and wellness of its residents through ME-BYO education and initiatives.

Vibrant discussion was held between knowledgeable experts from various sectors including Kanagawa Prefectural Government, global healthcare corporate, non-profit organization, and academia. Speakers delve into topics of Health Care New Frontier Policy, MIS concept, and MIS vision for human resource development. Though a lively multi-stakeholder dialogue, critical and constructive recommendations on “Desirable Global Leaders”, “Designing Forgiving Environment to Foster Challenges”, “Future Curriculum Content”, and “Utilizing Kanagawa Prefecture Field and Network for Research” were proposed.
Closing Remarks
Mr. Kentaro Yamaguchi, Director of Healthcare New Frontier Promotion Headquarters Office, articulated that MIS will strive to educate global and innovative leaders for the future.
