“United Nations Expert Group Meeting on Mental Well-being, Disability and Development” was held in Kuala Lumpur on 29 Apr – 1 May 2013. The meeting was organized by the United Nations University International Institute for Global Health and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, in cooperation with the University of Tokyo Department of Mental Health. Our senior associate, Mr. Kazumi Kubota was invited to attend the meeting.
About 20 key stakeholders from various backgrounds including the officers from United Nations and WHO, academic workers, civic members and representatives from patients association had attended the conference. Opinions of current key issues and trends in global mental well-being and disability in the context of development were exchanged and discussed; recommendations were made in the meeting.
An outcome report is created based on the discussion of three days. This outcome report is expected to serve as a reference document for creating (SG Report) report by the UN General to be submitted to the United Nations high-level meeting of the “Disability and Development” to be held in September 2013.
It is also expected that there will be an ongoing cooperation among the various stakeholders in the field of disability, mental well-being, health and development. From now on, mental well-being and disability in the context of development is in the anticipation of the Global Agenda.
