On Tuesday, November 20, 2018, Health and Global Policy Institute (HGPI) held the opening conference for its platform for issuing policy recommendations for dementia, Designing for Dementia.
Currently, about 35.6 million people around the world are living with dementia. This number is projected to exceed 100 million by 2050. In 2012, there were about 4.6 million people age 65 or older living with dementia in Japan. Their numbers are expected to exceed 10 million in 2050. Even though initiatives for dealing with dementia have been progressing in Japan and abroad, improving the daily lives of people with dementia and their families remains a considerable challenge.
The goal of the Hub is to accelerate the transition to a dementia-friendly future by creating plans based on the experiences and wisdom of people living with dementia in cooperation with people with dementia, their families and caregivers; community residents; healthcare, nursing care, and welfare practitioners; businesses; municipalities and related ministries and organizations; and researchers.
This opening event had a keynote address and dialogue session. Also, relay presentations were given by multi-stakeholders related to the four pillars of Designing for Dementia, which are “Interactive panels for people living with dementia,” “Academic research and evaluation,” “Demonstration and Implementation,” and “Policy recommendations and their dissemination.” A lively discussion was held on the pursuit of a vision of people with dementia leading better lives.
