Health and Global Policy Institute (HGPI) and AMR Alliance Japan together with the Department of Global Health Policy (GHP) at The University of Tokyo, co-hosted a joint lecture titled “One Health, One Planet – Combating AMR for a Sustainable Future: Understanding the Interconnections Between Human Health, Animal Health, Environment, and Sustainable Solutions.”

Dr. Kristina Osbjer, Director of Science at the International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions (ICARS), delivered an insightful lecture that deepened interdisciplinary understanding of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and emphasized the urgent need for multisectoral collaboration to combat AMR within the broader context of One Health recognizing the interdependence of human, animal, and environmental health.

The lecture explored AMR from a planetary health perspective, highlighting how human health, food systems, the environment, and sustainability are closely interconnected, while also addressing how issues like the overuse of antibiotics in agriculture, pollution of water systems with pharmaceutical residues, and loss of biodiversity are contributing to the global rise in drug resistance. Drawing from over 15 years of experience in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), Dr. Osbjer shared practical strategies for integrating scientific research with policy and local implementation efforts.

Participants were encouraged to reflect on the systemic drivers of AMR and the need for coordinated, cross-disciplinary action noting that tackling AMR is not solely a clinical issue but a global public good challenge that intersects with climate change, sustainable development, and health equity. Participants left with new insights, strengthened networks, and a shared sense of urgency to advance collaborative solutions in their respective fields.

■ Speaker’s Profile

Kristina Osbjer (Director of Science, International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions)

Dr. Kristina Osbjer is Director of Science at ICARS. She is a veterinary epidemiologist with over 15 years of working in research, capacity development and management of emerging health threats, including antimicrobial resistance, in low and middle-income countries. Kristina holds a degree in veterinary medicine (DVM) and a PhD in One Health and zoonotic diseases from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. In the past, she has served as Team Lead on AMR and animal health for FAO and has worked closely with governments and the Quadripartite on governance and control of AMR and infectious diseases. She has strong experience across Asian countries from postings in the region.
