On September 26, 2024, the Second UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting on AMR was held at the 79th UN General Assembly. The theme of the meeting, “Investing in the present and securing our future together: accelerating multisectoral global, regional and national actions to address antimicrobial resistance,” provided an opportunity for member states and stakeholders to reaffirm the growing threat of AMR and further strengthen AMR measures while listening to the stories of AMR survivors. One key outcome of the meeting was the approval of a Political Declaration (original text (English) / provisional translation (Japanese)) by UN member states, which establishes clear targets to reduce AMR-related deaths, promote sustainable financing, and expand the number of countries with funded national action plans on AMR.
Health and Global Policy Institute (HGPI) Chair, Mr. Ryoji Noritake and Manager, Ms. Yui Kohno both attended the High-Level Meeting on AMR as officially accredited participants and participated in the plenary session and two multi-stakeholder panels. Prior to the high-level meeting, HGPI also expressed its opinion at the multi-stakeholder hearing in May 2024.
On September 25, the day before the high-level meeting, HGPI and AMR Alliance Japan held a side event, “Global Action on AMR: Advancing Healthy Longevity and Sustainability under UHC.” At this meeting, AMR survivors, stakeholders from industry, government, academia, and the civil society gathered from all over the world to discuss Japan’s contribution to realizing better AMR policies and expectations for future international collaboration from diverse perspectives spanning humans, animals, food, and the environment.
HGPI believes it is important to bring together people from industry, government, academia, and civil society to facilitate fair and global interdisciplinary dialogues, extract policy issues from the perspective of patients, and generate and present multistakeholder-developed policy options for the public in the future.
The next UN High-Level Meeting on AMR is scheduled to be held in 2029, and a comprehensive review of the progress of the Political Declaration will be conducted. HGPI will continue to work to realize citizen-centered health policies.
