Thank you for your continued support and understanding of HGPI.
HGPI operates with financial support from foundations and companies as well as individual members both domestic and international. Your continued support enables HGPI to continue its activities as a non-profit, non-partisan think tank.
This year, we kicked off a new series of seminars called HGPI Seminar+(plus) for all individual members. HGPI Seminars +(plus) address various topics based on the specialties of individual HGPI staff using knowledge gained over the course of our projects. In addition to various themes in healthcare policy, we hope HGPI Seminars +(plus) will allow participants to learn more about HGPI and feel closer to our operations.
Through talks given by HGPI staff members at our first three seminars, we deepened our understanding of ongoing transitions in Japan’s policies for dementia and women’s health and examined the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) response in the U.S. together with everyone who participated.
Today, we are pleased to announce the fourth HGPI Seminar+(plus), “Global Health Basics: Health Issues Facing Children Around the World,” which will be held on Monday, November 30, 2020.
The upcoming seminar will feature a lecture from HGPI Senior Manager Ms. Eri Yoshimura. Using real-world examples, statistical data, and other information, Ms. Yoshimura will discuss health issues imposed upon children worldwide within the severe circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
As of November 2020, COVID-19 is continuing to spread around the world. However, even before the COVID-19 pandemic, infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis have been the source of serious public health issues, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Children are especially vulnerable and the impact of infectious diseases on children remains enormous. Furthermore, in countries or regions where healthcare resources are insufficient, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) present even more serious health issues. In places where people face discrimination or inequality due to their gender or because of customs or systems that do not respect human rights and social or cultural backgrounds, health issues are growing more severe, especially for children or young people.
In 2019 , an estimated 5.2 million children under age five died from what are said to be preventable or treatable causes, and one of the specific targets of the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is the elimination of preventable deaths among newborns and children ages five or younger by 2030.
In the upcoming HGPI Seminar+ on “Global Health Basics,” we would like to take a broad look at health issues facing children worldwide, countermeasures to those issues, and future prospects to deepen our understanding on these topics together with everyone in the audience.
We would like these seminars to generate interest in healthcare policy and allow us to connect with all supporting members who are active in various fields. Together, we will enhance HGPI’s ability to function as a hub that brings a policy community together to work towards helping citizens shape health policy.
