[Event Report] The 13th Session of Health Policy Academy, Lecture 1 — Introduction and View of Approaches to Public Policy (August 8, 2024)

Health and Global Policy Institute (HGPI) held the first lecture of the 13th session of Health Policy Academy (HPA), “Perspectives on Health Policy as a Citizen”.

In the first half of the lecture, Mr. Shunichiro Kurita, HGPI Senior Manager, gave a lecture on the theme of “Approaches to Public Policy.” The lecture covered the basics for studying health policy in the future, such as the formation of public issues and models of the policy process. In the second half of the lecture, Kohei Onozaki, HGPI Board Member, provided a comprehensive overview of the framework for health policy and public health by introducing recent topics in health policy as an introduction to the academy.

At the 13th Health Policy Academy, participants will spend approximately six months exploring how to engage with health policy as citizens. The curriculum is structured in stages, from the basics of policy, through theory and analysis, to practical application. Each lecture will feature instructors who are currently active in their respective fields, and participants from diverse backgrounds will engage in discussion. Through group work aimed at creating policy proposals that serve as the final assignment, the program aims to equip participants with the mindset necessary for the actual policy-making process.
