The Global Health Education Program (G-HEP) held its fourth lecture of the Global Health Academy on May 12, welcoming the Co-Director of the Department of Biodesign, University of Tokyo, Dr. Yujiro Maeda. The lecture focused on the theme Health Technology.
The first half of the lecture focused on introducing the concept of the Biodesign Program that began at Standford University in 2001. Dr. Maeda also explained the three phases of biodesign: identify an unsolved problem, invent a medical device to solve the problem, and implement the technology through commercialization.
The latter half of the lecture looked at medical devices and AI technology that has been developed in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. From 3D printed ventilators to AI medical imaging technology, there have been many innovative inventions to response to COVID-19 here in Japan and around the world. At the same time, the pandemic has reminded us of the need to strengthen ties between the government and health technology experts.
