About Chronic Pain

It has been reported that chronic pain affects 22.5% of the adult population in Japan, accounting for one in five people.

In recent years, a third class of pain, “nociplastic pain”, has been established, and the International Association for the Study of Pain revised its definition of pain in 2020 for the first time in over 40 years.

The new definition emphasizes the subjectivity and complexity of pain, and emphasizes various interventions based not only on medicine but also on the biopsychosocial (BPS) model are recommended for its treatment.

HGPI works on multi-stakeholder discussions, including policy advocacy activities, with the aim of building a system that provides effective and efficient access to a variety of interventions based on the latest scientific findings.
