2025 marks the 10th anniversary of the publication of the landmark report by the Rockefeller Foundation and the Lancet Commission, in which the concept of planetary health was formally proposed. It is also the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Planetary Health Alliance (PHA), of which Health and Global Policy Institute (HGPI) is an official member. The concept of planetary health has evolved from a new scientific concept into a solution framework for addressing interconnected global challenges. Growing evidence shows that in order for people to prevent disasters and achieve sustainable well-being, we need to fundamentally rethink our relationship with nature and with each other. The coming decade calls for accelerated action in all fields and at all scales. The Planetary Health Project of HGPI will also commemorate this 10th anniversary milestone and share the latest information about PHA.
PHA launched its newly redesigned official website in April 2025. The new website provides easier access to a wide range of resources and the latest information on planetary health. New features include:
- Over 2,000 searchable resources highlighting cutting-edge research and practical solutions
- A regional hubs section to foster regional collaboration and knowledge-sharing
- Educational content categorized by environmental changes and health impacts
- “Stories from the Field:” stories from the next generation of planetary health leaders
- Interactive listings for events, news, funding, and engagement opportunities
PHA’s Research & Resources page provides a comprehensive and searchable library of materials that support education, advocacy, and action at the intersection of human health and environmental change. Featuring thousands of curated resources, including academic publications, policy recommendations, case studies, and multimedia content, the library serves as a global knowledge hub for researchers, educators, policymakers, and practitioners.
Public recommendations and reports from HGPI’s Planetary Health Project are also featured on PHA’s Research & Resources page. These include proposals to incorporate a planetary health perspective into the 2023 UN UHC Political Declaration, a strategy for strengthening the resilience and decarbonization of Japan’s healthcare system, and a long-term vision for achieving a sustainable and healthy society by 2040. Additionally, it includes an HGPI published report analyzing the role of the health sector in addressing environmental issues and a column introducing Japan’s pharmaceutical industry’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality through green supply chains.
Planetary Health Alliance Japan Hub (PHAJHub), which was organized in May 2023 with Nagasaki University as its secretariat, is also carrying out various initiatives mainly in Japan. In order to strengthen the dissemination of planetary health information, HGPI has begun an initiative to translate the PHA newsletter into Japanese and deliver information to domestic readers. Moreover, PHAJHub is currently expanding its efforts by connecting local stakeholders across a broader region through the newly established East Asia Hub, which includes, in addition to Japan, also Korea, Mongolia, and Taiwan. This new regional network is designed to facilitate shared learning and coordinated action among countries facing common environmental and health challenges.
One of PHAJHub’s most popular events is the “Planetary Health Café & Bar,” a monthly online gathering that creates a relaxed space for informal conversations around planetary health. Open to students, professionals, and anyone interested in sustainability and well-being, the Café & Bar welcomes diverse participation, regardless of PHAJHub membership. The sessions are held online, encouraging open dialogue and inspiring practical action through cross-sector exchange. The PHAJHub hopes for this initiative to grow into a vibrant community of ideas and action. The themes and hosts will rotate monthly, inviting everyone to join, share, and co-create the future of planetary health together.
