On Thursday, February 29, 2024, Mr. Joji Sugawara, Vice President of Health and Global Policy Institute (HGPI), participated in a session titled “Planetary Health: A New Perspective on Sustainability Challenges Through Health Impacts” at an event organized by Mori Hamada & Matsumoto. The event was titled “The Forefront of Sustainability Law – Emerging Issues and New Developments.” Sugawara focused on the social and economic impacts of planetary health, explicitly addressing approaches to sustainability challenges in health, legal issues, and countermeasures. He shared insights on international trends through HGPI’s Planetary Health Project and domestic discussions.
The session discussed the growing importance of planetary health in Japan and internationally, exploring international legal regulations, policy trends, and their impact on businesses and healthcare policy. The importance of reconsidering sustainability from a health perspective for stakeholders in healthcare, as well as others, was emphasized, stating that the concept of planetary health is essential for sustainable development in society and business. The discussion also covered strategic approaches for companies to contribute to sustainability and methods to address legal challenges.
