Health and Global Policy Institute (HGPI) held the installment of “30-minute Health Policy Update,” a series of briefings for Diet Members about the most pressing health policy issues of today.
The topic of the meeting was “Strengthening Data Infrastructure and Use to Enhance the Sustainability and Resilience of the Health System.”
At the meeting, Prof. Hiroaki Miyata (Professor, Keio University) gave a lecture on issues brought to light within the health system by the COVID-19 pandemic, and how Japan can use the lessons learned from the pandemic to create a new health system and society. The lecture was followed by a lively opinion exchange session with many questions from attending Diet members.
■ Background
To respond to the emergence of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and help countries around the world respond to this crisis, in 2020, the London School of Economics (LSE), the World Economic Forum (WEF), AstraZeneca, Philips, KPMG, and others started the Partnership for Health System Sustainability and Resilience (PHSSR). In Japan, this partnership’s work is lead by Keio University and HGPI. Since FY2021, the PHSSR Japan project has gathered together health system experts to consider the key issues that arose within Japan’s COVID-19 response, what could have been done better, and how Japan can prepare for a future when health crises like COVID-19 may very well happen again. Prof. Miyata spoke about current issues in Japan derived from discussions so far within the PHSSR project. He also presented a new vision for Japan’s health system based on the project’s analysis of the COVID-19 response, and explained the importance of data infrastructure and use to the future of the health system.
