On June 30, 2021, AMR Alliance Japan held its second roundtable discussion on “Examining Numeric Targets for AMR Countermeasures – Setting Appropriate Performance Indicators in the Next AMR Action Plan”
It is estimated that as many as 8,000 people die every year in Japan of AMR-related causes, double the amount of people who die annually from traffic accidents. Globally, AMR leads to the death of up to 700,000 people annually. If trends continue, 10 million people could potentially die of AMR-related causes globally every year by 2050.
Japan’s “National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) 2016-2020” (hereafter “AMR Action Plan”) set six goals and numeric targets toward the achievement of the plan. While the numeric targets did help to promote AMR countermeasures, there is concern that they may have in some instances led to excessive disuse of antimicrobials, even in cases where antimicrobial use was appropriate.
The next AMR Action Plan for Japan has not been released as of June 2021. Toward the new plan, this meeting gathered expert opinion on how to set numerical targets for AMR countermeasures from FY2021 onward.
