Health and Global Policy Institute held the NCD Global Forum for Civil Society, Dementia Session, on Tuesday, November 20, 2018. At this roundtable session, members of industry, government, academia, and civil society working in the field of dementia, alongside leaders living with cancer and intractable diseases, came together to participate in cross-cutting, multi-stakeholder discussions on the theme of “supporting participation in employment and society.” Not only were opinions exchanged from a variety of viewpoints on challenges and solutions that relate to participation in employment and society within the dementia field, discussions also took place on prospects for tackling these challenges in ways that cut across non-communicable disease (NCD) therapeutic areas.
NCDs such as cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases, as well as mental and neurological disorders, have become a major health issue worldwide. According to statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), 39.5 million people died due to NCDs in 2015, accounting for approximately 70% of all causes of mortality. HGPI continues to facilitate global forums within each NCD therapeutic area to crystalize policy issues from patients’ perspectives, to propose necessary policies, and to bring together multi-stakeholders such as industry, academia, policy makers, and civil society including patient leaders from both inside and outside Japan. In May 2018, HGPI held a session focused on diabetes, and on November 6, a subsequent session focusing on cancer and the United Nations General Assembly Third High-level Meeting on NCDs.
